How can I make my own window treatment ?
Rather than overpowering your space with contrasting fabric colors, you can create simple curtain styles, valances and shades to keep it balance. If you are planning to use several fabrics for your window treatment, make sure to keep it simple and that the color blends.
You can cut two large fabrics enough to cover a window and give allowance for the seaming. An inch or two on each side is enough for window treatments. Lay the fabric face to face; make sure that the right faces of the fabric are together. Sew the top edge of both sides, then sew the bottom edge. Along the top, you can hang this window treatment with ribbon sewn. As a result, if the curtain is open, you can see both fabric and if closed, you can tie the ribbon at the bottom of the curtain rod.
You can create a vivid window treatment by draping lush fabric or scarves over the rod. You can make this in less than fifteen minutes without even sewing. For a more private window treatment, you create a tab top curtain with a heavy curtain cut on your desired length. Again, you have to put allowance for seaming. Make a smooth edge by hemming all sides and cutting out fabrics about eight by four inches, fold it lengthwise, in thirds and sew the edge. Make sure to hide the thread marks when you attach the tabs on the top of the curtains.
For pure decorative purpose, a valance is recommended. It is the most common among window treatments. You have to cut the fabric twice, as wide as the window, about sixteen inches long. Hem all side to have smooth edges and fold the top edge four inches to the backside of the fabric. Sew a straight line on the folded fabric marked two inches for the ruffles. Then, sew above the four-inch mark to connect the bottom edge. It will create a pocket for the rod. Now, slide the valance and the fluff is up to you.
