What can I do to keep swallows from building nests on the brick entryway of our home?

It is a nicely sheltered area that they occupy year after year. They leave bird crap on our stairs and it’s nasty stuff. What can I do to keep them from building a nest above our front door?
I tried tin foil and a fake owl, but nothing has truly worked yet.
Any ideas?
