If I plant tomato seeds now, (July 7), will they be grown and ripe before October?

Southern Illinois area, near St Louis, MO
I bought a tomato growing kit from Wal Mart, on sale for $2.00
Can I still grow tomatoes before a frost hits?

Yes they will if you make sure to water them early morning and keep the bugs off. If you don’t have real rich soil it may take longer.

My tomato plants are full grown now and i planted them in May ( i live in Missouri) i would say you are a bit behind and i would save that kit for next year. I would start the seedlings inside in the spring and put them out after the last frost in the spring.

What do you have to lose, two dollars. Go for it and make sure they get all the sun possible.

I started my tomatoes inside in February and now they are full grown and just starting to get some small green tomatoes and I live in Northern Illinois. I’m not expecting red ones for a couple of weeks yet and they have been growing for 5 months. So I would say that if you started them now you wouldn’t get tomatoes untill December. So I would save them untill next year.

I seriously doubt you will get tomatoes from seeds this late in the year. I always plant my tomatoes outdoors around Mother’s Day and start getting ripened fruit in late July early August. And this is after the plants are already 6 inches tall. It will take a minimum of two months to get fruit. I don’t think you’d make it in time before the first frost.

Save the kit for next spring. Start the seeds in February.
