How should I clean my refrigerator?

You would be hard-pressed to find a refrigerator that is not filled to the brim with half-eaten jars of salsa or jam, half-empty bottles of salad dressing or mayonnaise, leftover food, and leftover beverages. Because of its various contents, the refrigerator is particularly prone to stains from spilled food and liquids, among others. Cleaning your refrigerator may be tedious and exhausting, but with proper planning, it can be a breeze.

First, you would have to prepare the materials you will use for cleaning. Schedule a day when you’re not anticipating any pressing matter, because you might spend more than two hours just cleaning up. Keep garbage bags and paper towels at hand when you commence.

Remove first all your old containers, jars, and bottles. Check the expiration date on the foods you bought and if you find that the date has passed or is nearing, might as well throw the food away. Objects wrapped in foil or plastic that you cannot identify should also be thrown away. Check all the compartments in your refrigerator: the butter keeper, crisper drawers, ice box, and others, and remove old food from here as well.

After discarding what you don’t need, take the edible food aside and make sure it is kept separate from what you plan to throw away. It is recommended that these should be kept in a cool, dry place. Mix water and baking soda in a spray container and spray the whole interior of the refrigerator with it. Wipe the surfaces with paper towels, especially corner areas that have the tendency to collect crumbs.

In case a certain odor lingered inside the refrigerator, wipe it with diluted lemon juice so as to clean the odor without having an effect on the foods’ taste. After airing out your refrigerator for a short while, you can begin putting back the edible foods you saved. It’s a tedious process, but it’s fairly easy. Once you get the hang of it, you are assured that you will have a cleaner, more pleasant-smelling refrigerator before the effluvia inside gets out of hand.
