How do I build a compost bin ?

Want to contribute to a greener world? Build your own compost bin! Compost is nature’s way of tidying up after the mess humans made. It can contain anything from kitchen waste to yard clippings. Compost bins are very easy to construct, and the waste deposited into it can turn into very useful fertilizer in less than a year.

To create your own bin in a jiffy, you will need some wire woven fencing. These should be cut into a circle that is three or four feet in diameter. Bend the tabs of the wire where it was cut off towards the other end so that it can make some kind of container. To prevent compost from slipping through, construct the first layers of waste from grass clippings or fallen leaves. Later on you can add coffee grounds, eggshells, vegetable peelings, and many more.

You can also use a drum that can hold 55 gallons of liquid. Using a drill, puncture a couple of random holes into the lower part of the drum. You can now put in your grass clippings, raked leaves, and your kitchen wastes into the drum. Putting a lid on it is better so as to let it cook faster. This method is ideal for those who live in small spaces.

Some may also want to build their own compost bin from scratch, or from wooden pallets. This is considerably more difficult, and it is not advisable for people who do not have space to spare or for those who have no interest in gardening.

Compost requires heat in order to “cook” quickly. Thus, the best time for compost construction is during the summer months. If you start your own compost pile in the spring of this year, you can have your very own fertilizer, ready to take care of the plants as they bloom once again.
